Sample EPICs and User Stories – Writing a Book

Here's a Product Backlog example for the product “Writing a Book”.

The backlog is broken down into EPICs and associated User Stories.

Please note that these are just samples and just one of the ways of breaking down your product backlog.

You are smart enough and knows a lot of other ways of creating the User Stories.

Author's Perspective: Crafting the Book

EPIC 1: Define the Book's Vision and Structure

As an author , I want to define the book’s purpose and target audience so that I can ensure the content resonates with readers.

As an author , I want to create a detailed outline with chapter titles and a synopsis so that I have a clear writing roadmap.

As an author , I want to identify 2-3 competitor books and analyze them so I can position my book uniquely.

EPIC 2: Conduct Research and Develop Supporting Material

As an author , I want to collect data, case studies, and quotes from reliable sources so that I can support my key arguments with evidence.

As an author , I want to interview 5 subject matter experts so that I can incorporate expert perspectives in my book.

As an author , I want to organize all research material into folders by chapter so that I can easily access them while writing.

EPIC 3: Write the First Draft

As an author , I want to write Chapter 1 (Introduction) so that I can establish the context and hook the reader.

As an author , I want to write Chapter 2 (Core Concepts) so that readers understand the main ideas of the book.

As an author , I want to write 500 words daily so that I can complete the manuscript within 90 days.

EPIC 4: Review and Revise the Content

As an author , I want to revise each chapter based on clarity, tone, and flow so that the message is easily understood.

As an author , I want to use Grammarly and Hemingway Editor to fix grammar and improve readability.

As an author , I want to get peer feedback on 3 chapters so that I can incorporate external perspectives.

EPIC 5: Design and Layout the Book

As an author , I want to work with a graphic designer to create a cover that visually reflects the book's message.

As an author , I want to format the manuscript for both eBook and print versions so it meets publishing requirements.

As an author , I want to select fonts and spacing styles so that the book is readable and professional.

EPIC 6: Publish the Book

As an author , I want to choose a self-publishing platform (e.g., Amazon KDP) so that I can publish without a traditional publisher.

As an author , I want to upload the manuscript and cover file to the platform so that the book can be distributed.

As an author , I want to write a compelling book description and metadata so that the book ranks well in search.

EPIC 7: Promote and Market the Book

As an author , I want to create a 30-day book launch plan so that I can generate awareness and sales.

As an author , I want to build a landing page for the book so potential readers can learn more and sign up.

As an author , I want to schedule 5 podcasts or guest blog appearances so that I can reach a broader audience.

EPIC 8: Engage with Readers and Collect Feedback

As an author , I want to create a post-launch reader survey so I can gather feedback and testimonials.

As an author , I want to engage with readers via email or social media so that I can build a loyal audience.

As an author , I want to track reviews on Amazon and Goodreads so that I understand public sentiment.
